Why Is It Important to Get Your Teeth Cleaned Multiple Times Per Year?

January 17, 2020

The idea that you only go to the dentist to fix dental problems, such as a toothache or discolored teeth, is a long-standing misconception. Many people think that it’s not really necessary to get regular dental care and cleanings, but this assumption has caused many people a lot of problems that could have been avoided with preventive dental visits.

It’s true that dentists correct dental problems, but they also help to maintain our oral health. Dentists always have hygienists on staff to clean our teeth and provide professional-level maintenance. Let’s talk about why a regular dental cleaning is so important.

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene

Regularly going to the dentist doesn’t just stop at getting your teeth cleaned by the hygienist and having a once-over by the dentist. It also gives your dentist a chance to examine your overall oral health, such as your tongue and your upper neck area, and give you recommendations or feedback.

Some of the practices involved in oral hygiene include brushing your tongue, flossing your teeth multiple times per day, and brushing your teeth at least twice a day. The dentist will also advise you about which products you’re using and what may or may not be working for you.

For example, you may need a certain kind of toothpaste for tooth sensitivity, or a certain kind of toothbrush for maximum effectiveness. Getting your teeth professionally cleaned regularly will ensure you maintain the best oral health possible in order to avoid diseases that can develop.

Getting a Thorough Cleaning

Dental associations recommend that you get your teeth cleaned at least twice a year if your teeth and gums are relatively healthy. A dental cleaning addresses the natural buildup of plaque in your teeth, which happens naturally even if you follow excellent oral hygiene practices.

Dentists and dental hygienists use tools and agents that are available only to professional dental practices. For example, you remove plaque every time you brush your teeth, but plaque still builds up very deeply along the gumline and between teeth. Regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing are not enough to remove it all.

Early Damage Control

Dentists are experts at detecting signs of oral health issues, and they know whether an issue is likely to lead to a disease or if surgery might be necessary. Some dental problems that many of us are naturally at risk of are tooth decay, tooth loss, and gum-related diseases. These issues, when left untreated, can lead to costly and tedious procedures.

Getting your teeth cleaned regularly is key to avoiding serious dental issues in the future. For the small cost of visiting your dentist regularly, you’ll save a lot on the time and money you would have to spend to repair the damage caused to your teeth and gums.
