Why Are My Gums Receding?

September 27, 2019

You are probably more interested in healthy teeth than healthy gums, because healthy teeth are what make a healthy-looking smile. But if your gums are receding, you may be wondering why that is happening and whether it has health implications.

Your gums hold and protect the base and roots of your teeth. They are sealed fairly well around your teeth, preventing bacteria from reaching the interior. But when the gums begin to recede or have pulled back, more of the tooth or teeth are exposed.

Fortunately, reversal is possible for receding gums. Let’s talk about what causes this condition and how you can prevent your gums from receding:

What Is Causing My Receding Gums?

There are many reasons why your gums may begin to recede. Some are unavoidable, but many are actually avoidable.

Age

As we get older, our gums inevitably begin to recede. However, you can keep this to a minimum by gently brushing your gums every time you brush your teeth. Always brush away from the gums, which means brushing downward on the upper gums and brushing upward on the lower gums.

Flossing and rinsing regularly also help to exercise the gums. Good oral hygiene will help to maintain strong, healthy gums on an ongoing basis.

Periodontal Disease

The main preventable cause of receding gums is periodontal disease. The earliest stage is gingivitis, which is the minor gum infection that causes the gums to become a darker pink color than usual.

Gingivitis and periodontal disease are caused by bacteria that attack the gum tissue and surrounding bone that keep teeth in place. Regular visits to the dentist are crucial to preventing this condition, because a dentist always looks for the early signs of periodontal disease. Symptoms include redness, swelling, bleeding, and bad breath.

Incorrect Brushing

Improper brushing habits, such as brushing your teeth too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush, can cause your gums to recede due to physical wear and pressure. Be sure to brush gently and with soft or medium-bristled toothbrushes.

Poor Oral Habits

Clenching your teeth, grinding your teeth, biting down hard, and even smoking can cause gums to recede. If you grind your teeth when you sleep at night, or if you play high-impact sports that causes you to clench your teeth (such as basketball), ask your dentist about getting a mouth guard. And if you stop smoking, your gums will thank you.

Genes

If someone in your immediate family has ever been diagnosed with periodontal disease, you have an increased likelihood of developing the disease. Talk with your dentist about how to prevent the onset and progression of the disease.

Experienced Dentist in Henderson, Nevada

By getting regular dental cleanings and checkups at the dentist, bacteria will find it difficult to attack your teeth and gums. Your dentist will evaluate the condition of your gums and will recommend strengthening treatments as necessary to foster healthy gums.
